Hot Tips!

Congress has made the 2010 rules regarding estate taxes in a word "convoluted". In many cases they are very different from the old law so make sure you start the New Year by reviewing your estate plan. Especially this year!

If you have a trust, make an appointment to make sure it is up-to-date with current law and that it reflects any changes in your personal status. If you haven't worried about estate planning before, this is the year to stay ahead of Congress and protect what is yours.

At the very least, take the time this January to make a will.

If you don't have a will, do it now. Karen has notes on her blog www.Karens-Law.blogspot.com that will help you and she is holding a seminar this month if you need more information on the subject.
Contact jane@arnettlegal.com for seminar time and space availability.

Make an appointment at 850-502-4373 if you have questions and require personal assistance.

Here's to a good and prosperous 2010!

Karen's Blog

As another way to keep everyone current on subjects like trust planning and how to avoid probate, senior partner Karen Arnett has created a blog at: www.Karens-Law.blogspot.com.

Her first blog is an invitation to professional financial planners and CPA's to a roundtable discussion on: The Pros and Cons of transferring a Florida residence into a revocable trust. Let us know if we can get you information on this important subject by emailing us with your contact information at jane@arnettlegal.com. If you know someone buying property in Florida and unfamiliar with Florida's Homestead Law, this is a subject of interest.

Overachiever

Every attorney has to keep abreast of the ever changing laws and court proceedings. It's a critical part of their obligation to their clients and their profession. It is an elite few who take on the additional commitment of a Masters in Taxation. Not for everyone, adding the prestigious acronym LLM to your title is a difficult task. Recognizing the value of additional expertise in this complicated subject , Jane Kerrigan has taken on that goal. We salute her commitment and appreciate the hard work that goes with it.

We are proud to announce that Daniel Frankfurt has recently been honored with several special appointments and memberships:
Daniel is an active participant in his community. As "Ambassador" for the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce, he welcomes and mentors new and existing chamber members. You will find him in attendance at most Destin and Walton County chamber events.

Daniel is an avid sports enthusiast and regularly plays team softball and "ultimate Frisbee". This year he was honored to be appointed to the City of Destin Recreation Committee by Councilman Charles Windes. That position will give him the opportunity to recommend projects relating to Destin recreational matters including the need for additional parks, recreational programs and facilities. And while he hasn't won awards or special appointments for his golf game, he happily participates in charity tournaments whenever he can.

Rounding out his diverse interests, this month Daniel was appointed VP of Education of Destin Toastmasters mentoring new members on the art of public speaking.

Karen Arnett loves to talk about what you can do to protect your assets.
Her experience in settling matters of probate, made it clear to her how important it is to make people aware that while executing a will is a critical plan component, it is only one part of a comprehensive estate plan and will not necessarily avoid probate. Karen is a member of the Estate Planning Council of the Emerald Coast, Inc., Wealth Counsel and the Advisors Forum, and she has acquired considerable experience on the subject through many years of practice. Speaking on the subject at least quarterly, last month Karen was
asked to be a guest speaker at the CHELCO Retirement Planning Seminar
in DeFuniak Springs.

To be invited to her next Estate Planning Seminar or to invite her to speak at your company or organization, please contact laurel@arnettlegal.com

Under bright blue skies, Arnett & Kerrigan attorneys, family and support staff created a work of art at the Via Colori street art festival. Held for the first time at Grand Boulevard, this annual event benefits Seaside Neighborhood School. Artists from the area are available to work with festival sponsors to create the chalk based piece but the Arnett & Kerrigan team chose to make a day of it designing and then painting the piece as a group effort. "BE JUST" celebrates our legal system with a playful depiction of the Scales of Justice. It was a beautiful day for the colorful community event and the law office was happy to be a part of it.
